This project is requiring us to design something that is comfortable and relatable for the runaway youth that would be staying there. The design must reflect the mission of the foundation to inspire, uplift and bring about positive change. I decided to use the inspiration a carousel. As we know, a carousel is an amusement ride that has a rotating circular platform with seats for riders. The seats are in the forms of rows of wooden horses or other animals. I used the elements of a carousel within my design. A perfect example of how I used these elements is in my sandwich shop. I wanted to make sure that I used straight and circular lines throughout the space. These are the lines that you will find in any carousel with the circular top and platform and the straight polls that stick through the horses. I had to find an equal balance of using both. As well as the types of lines that I used I wanted to make everything simple but as well as highly detailed. Carousels are highly detailed and ornate. They are the perfect example of how highly detailed and simple designs are put together at equal balance. As you can see from the trend, carousels are highly contrasted in lines, detail and color. That is why within my design I use light colors for the walls and floors with one accent wall that is dark. Also the use of dark and light contrasting furniture is an important accent to the room. I needed to use an equal balance of these characteristics to create a fun, inviting, and comfortable space that anyone can relate to. I think I used a combination of industrial loft and glam design style. I used hard surfaces, soft plush fabrics, mirrors, glitz, and simple layouts. Here are some materials used in my sandwich shop:

In my Residential II class we have entered into a competition through the Bienenstock Furniture and Interior Design Competition. The Bernice Bienenstock Furniture Library is committed to helping students bring their best designs to all projects. That is what this project is about. In this competition we are required to come up with a design for the Harmony House Foundation. The Harmony House is an unconventional youth shelter, located in Seattle, Washington. The facility provides housing, along with a healing and rehabilitating environment for youth aged 10 to 17. The goal of the foundation is to provide a facility that is secure, stable and designed to inspire and change lives. The term unconventional refers to the fact that the foundation desires the completed design to resemble a home-like quality that than an institutional facility. The design should reflect the mission of the foundations to inspire, uplift and bring about positive change. Consistent with this mission is a commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Here in this project is where the challenge lies.

The first floor of the Harmony House is a sandwich and soup lunch shop that features organic and locally harvested items operated by a creative and motivated team who train and mentor those housed at the facility. Harmony House offices will also occupy space on the first floor with mentoring spaces. A huge part of designing any interior space is figuring out the space planning in an effective and functional way. The building is a three-floor masonry storefront in an historic neighborhood in Seattle. When figuring out the layout of the first floor you cannot alter the building’s façade, which means the window or door sizes.  Stairwell and elevator locations cannot be changed as well. When planning I had to also take in account that the building is located on the northeast corner of a relatively busy intersection of the neighborhood, which during the day has quite a bit of pedestrian traffic as well. That is why that I thought it was extremely crucial to have the sandwich sitting on that corner, as well as, have access to all of the windows. It is important to have it set up that way so that customers are drawn into the sandwich shop. Another important element in planning the layout is that is only one set of bathrooms on the first floor. It was important to make sure that customers in the restaurant could access the bathrooms as well as the people using the mentoring rooms and offices. I thought that it was very important to make sure both areas were separate, that way the offices and mentoring rooms could be away from the noise. It would not be functional to have sandwich shop customers roaming around in the corridors of the offices. Functionality is what is key in designing my floor plan.

The second floor is an important part of the Harmony House. It is actually the area with residences rooms that are being taken care of by the foundation. There at least six rooms, two lounge areas, computer area, and a counselor’s station. The main focus again is being able to have clear and easy access to the restrooms. With there being gathering areas on the second floor, I thought it was important to put the bathrooms in the middle once again. I made sure that all of the rooms had a view of the street so that they can take advantage of natural light. The restrooms and social gathering areas were on the back side of the building because they did not need to have access to windows. All of the gathering areas are in one area so that they can easily access any of them at any time. It will also allow the kids that are staying to have social interactions because everyone would be in one similar area. I thought it was important to keep things fairly simple and easily accessible. One of the main factors in our design was to make everything homey and comfortable; simplicity is a way to make people comfortable in their living environments.

End of Commercial

This semester in my first Commercial class we were required to space plan and design the American Heart Association head quarters in Dallas Texas, as well as, the first Go Red Clinic in the United States. This project was very challenging. There were a lot of requirements and codes that we had to abide too. The most challenging part was the space planning of this project. The building was completed built out of glass so as the designer I had to figure what rooms should be on the wall and what should be in the middle of the building. This was a challenging task cause you had to make sure you were meeting the room size and turning radius requirements. Meeting the room size requirements was a huge factor into the layout of the building. The building was designed to be very open for a lot of collaboration and easy access to all parts of the buildings. 

 

For my building I stuck to the same theme throughout both buildings so that they looked like they belonged together.  I felt that floor to ceiling windows reminded me of a loft so I kinda made that my theme. I wanted a lot of exposed brick, wood floors, and metal posts. The main color I stuck to was a mustard yellow with splashes of teal to spice up the room. As you can see in my perspectives I made each room unique but similar. I wanted this office to be inviting and fun so that people enjoyed their work environments. People need a vibrant atmosphere that is very well lit and attractive to the eye. It creates a productive and effective work force. 

This project was a great learning experience I was able to learn a lot more about the commercial codes such as what the standard turning radius is for a wheel chair, the standards for bathroom stalls and handicap bathroom stalls.  I learned about the affects of natural light on people and how it can greatly improve their work efforts, outcomes, and moods. I strengthened my skills of space planning and the effects of certain layouts. I also learned to work with a restricted amount of space. For my first commercial class we were assigned to space plan and design two buildings for the American Heart Association and Go Red Clinic. These are my designs:

Client Inspiration

 Woodward Residence

I am working with Holly and Mark Woodward to help them design their new dream home. They live in High Point North Carolina close to the historic district. They have an older house that is needing some renovations and expansions to the master bedroom, walk-in closet, garage, laundry room, and kitchen. I will assist them in choosing fabrics, finishes, furnishings, and equipment for the living room/ dining room, master suite, den, and kitchen. They are not planning to move again so I must make their home accessible for future possible issues such as possible children or the need for a wheel chair. There are some pieces in the home that they are wanting to keep, so I need to find ways to work them into the space. Mark tends to have a taste more for the modern, mid-century look. As while Holly, the definite girl, really likes the glam combined with traditional.  My job is to help them find a happy medium for the two. My goal is to help them find that perfect middle ground, brighten up the home, and treasure the beauty of their older home. 

Some inspirations for my new clients:

I chose this image because Holly told how she loved teal with in the room. So the teal pendulum light fixtures add a splash of color to the mostly neutral room. She also loves floor length curtains with the retro print. I know that Mark tends to like have neutral rooms with splashes of colors in the accessories. I think this is a good of example of how I can mist the different styles together. 

I am really drawn to this image by the brightness. I think that this might be something that could be used in their home. A bright color neutralized like this yellow might be a nice addition to the home to help make the rooms seem brighter and bigger. This is an example of traditional and glam and would be really close to Holly's liking. 

There is one thing that Mark and Holly agree on is high contrast rooms. This might be something that might want to think about for their kitchen. This may not be glam enough for Holly's tastes but it would definitely suit Marks tastes for the modern look that he really enjoys. 

This might be more to both of their liking. Holly really likes an all white kitchen and with the simplicity of the room we could really glam it up to help meet her likings. This something to keep in mind for the renovations of their kitchen.

Holly and Mark told me how they were not afraid of combining patterns and textures. I think this is a great example of how we can do that within their home. Not just only the bedroom. This room has a Contemporary look as well as traditional. This is good medium ground for my clients.

This is definitely a bathroom made for a female. This is a great example of the kind of style that Holly really enjoys. We might could take some of the elements from this bathroom and incorporate them into their own home.
